The capitate is one of the eight small bones that form the wrist. These are called as carpal bones. Capitate is placed at the centre of the wrist and the largest of all these eight bones.

It joins with the bones of hand and helps in movement of index, middle, and ring fingers like opening and closing fingers(flexion & extension) to form the fist and bringing together and spreading of these fingers(abduction & adduction).

Disease/ Injury/ Fracture

Bone rarely gets fractured alone separately. It can be fractured with other carpal bones. Falling on a clenched fist can fracture the capitate. Falling on an outstretched hand can cause fracture of the bone along with other bones of the wrist.

Interesting Facts

Some bones in wrist move by gliding over each other and called as gliding joints.
